Bitcoin Gambling Statistics
50% of all blockchain transactions are related to gambling
Estimates suggest that around 50% of all blockchain transactions are related to gambling. According to Bitrates, approximately 1.5 million people use cryptocurrency to gamble online, with Bitcoin being the most popular, followed by Ethereum.
Top casino coins
Most casinos accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Tether, Bitcoin Cash, and Dogecoin – all among the top 10 by market cap (except Litecoin, which is 15th as of August 2026).
2020 – the year of crypto casinos
The first crypto-accepting online casinos appeared soon after Bitcoin’s release in 2009, but the first crypto-focused casinos appeared in 2014. The first provably fair games on blockchain emerged in 2015. The 2017 altcoin boom brought the first wave of crypto casinos, 7% of the current market. The highest influx came in 2020: 22.3% of all crypto casinos were established in 2020, followed by 2021 at 19.7%.
Market survival and the “deadly” 2022
Many inexperienced operators entered during the 2020 hype. The 2022 crypto market crash “cleansed” the market: 25% of crypto casinos started in 2021 no longer exist. None of the casinos started before 2014 have closed – they are primarily fiat-oriented and less affected by crypto volatility.
Coin variety and user convenience
Most casinos accepting over 10 cryptocurrencies opened in 2017 or 2018, during the altcoin frenzy. The average number later dropped back to the top 7 (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Tether, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin, Ripple). Only a few casinos accept 10 to 50 coins, and even fewer accept over 100. Both approaches argue for user experience: limited coins ensure compatibility, while many coins allow internal conversion without leaving the casino.
Crypto Anonymity & Flexibility
A shift to crypto is a shift to anonymity
Over 35% of all crypto-accepting casinos require only an email to sign up, deposit, and play. Crypto-only casinos usually ask for one or two pieces of personal information, while hybrid casinos (accepting fiat and crypto) require more than four pieces.
Crypto-only means more flexibility
Minimum deposits in crypto-only casinos average less than $30 – half that of hybrid casinos. Maximum deposits in crypto-only casinos are almost 15 times higher than in hybrids, with nearly 90% not limiting them. Maximum withdrawals are nearly three times higher, and over half of crypto-only casinos impose no withdrawal limits. Minimum withdrawals are also nearly 50% lower. In-house games offer unlimited bets, with some allowing 100 BTC or more per spin.
Crypto Games
In-house crypto games are provably fair
About 10% of all crypto casinos developed their own in-house games, most commonly Bitcoin Dice or crypto Crash games. These originated from standalone gambling sites and entered casinos as early as 2015. Later additions include Mines, Plinko, hi-lo, provably fair slots, wheel spin, and classic games like poker, blackjack, and roulette. Casinos with in-house games beyond Crash and Dice are rare – only around 5% of the market.
Big Wins in Crypto Gambling
All-time biggest wins per game type:
- Crypto poker: $7,750,652 – won by Antanas Guoga (Tony G) in February 2022, also the largest online poker pot ever.
- Crypto slots: $2,459,124 – won by a BitStarz player on Azrabah Wishes (GameArt) in a single spin with x15,000 multiplier.
- Online live roulette: 53 BTC – won on Cloudbet’s Live Roulette in September 2018, worth around $348,560 at the time.
- Crypto dice: 11,000 BTC – won by a player known as Nakowa in 2013, worth about $1.3 million at the time.
Crypto slots produce the most frequent big wins, from a few hundred thousand to half a million dollars. However, players who win big often lose big afterward, chasing losses with higher stakes.
Responsible Gambling
Crypto casinos do not offer responsible gambling tools
Five major responsible gambling tools are in use across online casinos: self-exclusion, reality-check, time-limits, deposit-limits, and account closure. Almost all casinos offer account closure, but other tools are less common. About 1% of crypto casinos lack self-exclusion. Most casinos require contacting support to request these tools. Crypto-only casinos, which often use their own software, are less likely to include responsible gambling features. Hybrid casinos, using rented software, are more likely to have them integrated.
The data shows that while crypto casinos offer flexibility, anonymity, and provably fair games, they fall short on responsible gambling. Players must verify outcomes independently and set their own limits. No casino can guarantee safety – only provably fair verification can confirm fairness.
